For the first time in Singapore, Underwater World Singapore brings these little-known pre-historic creatures to the surface and houses them in a special dome-like structure. Connected to the dome is a specially constructed tunnel for children to crawl into and go beneath the tank to observe the swarming isopods in close proximity. With over 4,000 facets to its huge aviator-shades-like eyes, the 28-cm Giant Isopod is accustomed to low levels of light and can see in pitch darkness. A distant cousin of the shrimp and crab that feeds mostly on dead sea animal carcasses, the isopod dates back to over 160 million years ago.
